What Makes Good Lumber?

Quality wood is rather easy to distinguish from inferior wood. A good piece of lumber will be straight and solid. The common test for a piece of lumber’s straightness is to hold it near your eyes and look down the face of the wood. Flip it over a couple of times to get the full picture. If there is a bow in the wood, it will be fairly noticeable.

Additionally, any visible knotting in the lumber may become problematic. Knots in lumber are hard to drive nails through, which makes it difficult to use. Splits also make it hard for the wood to hold nails. Lumber should also be free from mold.
