A Renewed Resource
Native to the majestic coniferous forests of Canada’s British Columbia, the Western Red Cedar is one of North America’s great treasures. The British Columbia Ministry of Forests places serious limits on the number of cedars that logging companies are allowed to harvest. Every year, approximately 11.2 million board-feet of red cedar are harvested along the British Columbia coast. Although this may seem like a large number, it amounts to less than 1% of the province’s overall Western Red Cedar growing population.
The Ministry of Forests maintains a healthy growing cedar population by carefully monitoring the overall population of the plant. Experts draw up the allowable limits based on a review process that happens every five years or fewer. In addition to making sure that only a small part of the population is cut down every year, the Ministry mandates that areas be reseeded after they are harvested. According to the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association, there are roughly three of these remarkable trees planted for every one forested, ensuring that the Western Red Cedar will exist for countless generations to come.
