Comparing Viking Western Red Cedar to the Competition
The Importance of QualityWhen you buy a wood fence, the most important elements are durability and aesthetics. Quality is of utmost importance. Most of the wood industry has moved to using 5/8”-thick pickets – some have even gone so far as to use 1/2"-thick wood. At Viking, we insist on milling a true 3/4"-thick picket. We’re also the only fence company in Texas that offers a 5/4” board. Natural Decay ResistanceBecause of its natural qualities, Western Red Cedar does not require any chemical or kiln treatment, which gives it a low carbon footprint and environmental impact, making it a superior choice to pine, spruce, fir, and other woods. A Renewable ResourceAt Viking Fence, we get our Western Red Cedar from British Columbia, where the annual harvest is restricted to only 1% of the territory’s growing stock. According to the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association, three trees are planted for every one that is harvested. |
PinePine is prone to warping, meaning its aesthetic qualities decrease rapidly over time. It does not have Western Red Cedar’s natural decay resistance. Chinese Cedar/FirDo not let the name fool you. Chinese Cedar is probably actually a fir. While it has recently been introduced in this country, its use over the last 20 years in Australia and New Zealand has shown that it cannot deliver the long-term quality. Spruce/Doug FirSpruce and Douglas Fir lack dimensional stability and are prone to decay. There is a reason that it is inexpensive. If you need a stable and long-lasting fence, purchasing high-quality materials is worth it. |
